Abstract
While it is common knowledge that Chile is the top producer of copper in the world, the effects this success has on the environment and on working conditions in the mine, is often forgotten. This project will be focusing on the history of Chile’s copper mining industry and how it has impacted the environment and the working conditions of the past and the present. I will be describing some of the harmful effects mining leaves on the environment and the various safety and health concerns for workers. My project consists of evaluating a variety of primary sources, including newspaper articles, maps, and journal entries, and connecting them through secondary sources. This provides multiple different perspectives and puts them into context with the broader picture of Chile. The goal of this work is to better inform readers on the consequences of one countries success. They can determine if they think copper mining should be as large and successful as it is, although it causes negative effects on the environment and on humanity.
